Helix Comes to Life!

In my earlier post "Take a closer look..." I explained how my inspiration to create Helix came from a conversation I had about a doctor’s work in therapy and her observations on how people change. She mentioned that people often revisit or revert back to old behaviors several times before actualizing change in their lives.

The doctor's "Helix" observation was spot on and I hope I did it justice with my visual representation of this fundamental human experience. We humans are complex beings with years of baggage to unpack — from our many places traveled. When you compound that with having to bring about change in our lives, the road can become overwhelming.

To fully actualize change, we may need to arrange and rearrange, several times, before reaching a balance, a place of comfort, like an old pair of jeans. And while no one knows better than ourselves how to reach a place where we feel centered, at times, we may need help organizing and purging some of this baggage. Often this kind of help requires a completely independent and objective view, one that family and friends — however well intentioned —cannot provide.

Helping someone figure out their thoughts and feelings is not like helping them manage a project or simply fixing a problem. More than knowledge and experience, it takes perception, patience, empathy, and kindness to gain someone’s trust and willingness to receive the required help.

This does not mean that your dirty laundry may not be called out when needed, in fact it is necessary when traversing change to acknowledge our own contributions to the discomfort.

This is where the real work takes place. There is no silver bullet and you can't skirt around it. Through it is the only way forward, even though we sometimes may take 10 steps back and 2 forward.

The inspiration behind Helix was driven by a woman Dr. Maria Gonzalez, who embodies all of these qualities and more.

Dr. Gonzalez is one of those people that crosses your path, perhaps, only once in a lifetime, someone who gives many different meanings to a life, who works with you through the ebbs and flows, the ups and downs like a spiral — a helix.

Through the years, Dr. Gonzalez has provided me that support when I've needed it the most. She’s helped me try on different lenses through which to view things that seemed magnified with a brighter scope. With her support, I’ve found a place where I feel balanced and centered, right here, where I am now.

This kind of support is not for everyone, but for people who may be at a crossroad or carrying a heavy load from a life well traveled, and are in need of a different perspective, try making an appointment with her. If you are lucky enough to schedule one, it will be time and money well spent on self-care, development, and love.

Change is hard, and "life is a journey, not a destination." While this is all true, it doesn’t mean that change has to be painful or that your journey has to be solitary. For the company I’ve enjoyed on my own journey, I am thankful and extremely grateful!

A special thanks to Cabrooks Films for creating a video that captured the journey to create Helix!
