Hi Subscriber First Name, On this autumn equinox—a moment when light and darkness briefly stand in equilibrium—I have been thinking about the equities that shape our human exchange. The balance between generosity and discernment. Between dreaming and doing. Between making our work visible and protecting what is not freely available for others to take. I have always believed in bringing meaningful ideas into the light. An idea hidden cannot reach the person who needs it. A vision left unspoken cannot gather collaborators, resources or momentum. But visibility does not automatically mean availability. What we bring into the light becomes visible. It does not become public property. Sharing an idea is not permission for someone else to separate it from its creator, carry it into another room and present it as their own. As I have come to say: Giving you the shirt off my back does not give you permission to take it. There is a meaningful difference between something being offered and something being taken. I have been learning that difference more deeply this year. Last October, after attending a convening focused on arts and public health, I began thinking seriously about the role of the coach within the healing-arts ecosystem. Artists help us express what words cannot always hold. Creative arts therapists bring clinical training to the therapeutic use of art. Healthcare and public-health professionals contribute essential knowledge about health, treatment and community conditions. Coaches bring something distinct. We help people translate insight into agency. We accompany them as they recognize patterns, clarify what matters, identify what is within their control and practice sustainable ways of moving forward. We help create the conditions in which an experience does not simply feel meaningful for an hour, but becomes integrated into how someone lives. The coach is not there to replace the artist, therapist, clinician or community leader. The coach helps connect the experience to the person’s continuing life. Following that event, a nonprofit organization asked me to develop a proposal. I created a 26-week program grounded in arts-based coaching, human behavior, reflection and change. It was not a loose collection of interesting activities. It was a carefully constructed pathway informed by years of professional experience, coaching practice and the work I have developed through The Glass Room®. The proposal identified its written framework, language and program materials as original work developed through The Glass Room®—work that was, and remains, mine. The proposal went nowhere. Or at least that was how it appeared. Just last week, I learned of a grant opportunity from one of the organization’s partners seeking 26 weeks of programming. Coincidence? Perhaps. I cannot know what happened in conversations I was not invited into. I can, however, notice the pattern and remain curious about what it reveals. This was not the first time. In an earlier conversation, I suggested incorporating stained glass into another nonprofit’s programming as a way for participants to explore change through my Living Life in the Meantime® model. The suggestion appeared to go nowhere. Months later, stained glass emerged within that organization’s programming—without conversation, acknowledgment or invitation. Earlier this year, despite the quiet voice within me saying, Once bitten, twice shy, I reached out again. I shared a larger vision: What if every school had a work of art that young people could gather around and contribute to—a communal creative practice available as an alternative to detention? What if, instead of responding to every difficulty with punishment, we also created places for reflection, regulation, restoration and belonging? After several follow-ups, there was silence. Perhaps the idea will remain silent too. Perhaps one day it will appear somewhere else. I am choosing understanding over assumptions. I am practicing patience and extending the benefit of the doubt. Clarity asks us to name the pattern. Curiosity keeps us from pretending we know what we cannot know. Discernment helps us decide what access we will offer next. This is not only about my work. Something has likely been taken from many of us at some point: an idea, a phrase, a program, a piece of writing, a creative contribution or an opportunity. Someone with greater positional power, greater access or a larger platform carried it farther than we could. The work became visible. Its originator did not. That experience should make us more conscious of how we handle the ideas entrusted to us. Yet too often, institutions created to serve the public good reproduce the same power patterns they say they want to change. Resources travel through familiar networks. Opportunities return to the same rooms. Ideas are welcomed more readily than the people who conceived them. The field may appear collaborative while remaining closed. The shell moves. The resources move. The recognition moves. But the same people continue to benefit. A worthy mission does not automatically create an equitable practice. Nonprofit status does not exempt an organization from attribution, consent or fair compensation. Nor does operating as a socially conscious business make someone less community-minded, less generous or less deserving of partnership. A kind heart is not an open-access license. A desire to collaborate is not permission to extract. Conscious collaboration is an art. It requires more than inviting someone to share what they know. It requires noticing who generated the idea, who performed the labor, who holds the relationships, who receives the funding and who is ultimately seen. Theory and practice are not the same. Theory can help us imagine what might be possible. Practice asks us to create it, test it, refine it and remain with it long enough to learn what actually serves people. Practice takes time. It takes labor. It takes courage, failure, revision, listening and the willingness to begin again. The programs I create are not simply ideas I thought about. They come from hard-earned and heart-earned practice—from accompanying people through uncertainty, witnessing what helps, noticing what harms and translating those lessons into experiences that restore agency. Theory is a noun. Creating is a verb. Theory may be the flint. Creating strikes the spark. Practice tends the fire long enough for warmth to gather around it. There is a familiar line: Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. That is what artists do. Someone once asked me, “What is an artist?” My answer then was different from the one I would give today. Today, I believe we are all born creative. What makes us artists is our willingness to enter the act of creating—to move beyond thinking about what could exist and begin giving it form. Art lives in the balance between dreaming and doing. So does meaningful change. The healing-arts field is growing. That growth brings possibility, but it also brings responsibility. If we want this work to become more visible, valued and accessible, we cannot build the field by making its creators invisible. We need artists, coaches, therapists, clinicians, researchers, funders, educators and community leaders working together—not guarding territories, playing power games or quietly absorbing one another’s work. There is room for all of us. There is no need to take another person’s offering and remove their hands from the story. If someone’s idea inspires your grant proposal, call them. If their framework strengthens your program, name them. If their work belongs in the room, invite them into it. If resources become available, share them. And if collaboration is not possible, ask permission before carrying their work forward. This is how we rewrite the story. Not by closing our hands and refusing to share, but by becoming more conscious of how we receive what others offer. Not by making ourselves smaller, but by becoming clearer about the conditions under which our work may travel. Not by competing for the light, but by recognizing that the light grows when we reflect it toward one another. The time to work together is now. And working together begins by remembering that visibility is not availability. It is an invitation to see. What happens next rests in the balance—and in the choices we make.
